Ben Dory, Respiratory and Sustainability Policy Lead for AstraZeneca UK

SHC Member since 2011

The network that The Sustainable Healthcare Coalition provides is unmatched in the UK.
Collaboration is at the core of our business and is absolutely essential when it comes to dealing with
climate change. For us, for example, collaboration with our suppliers is key to reducing the carbon footprint of our whole-value chain. It’s also critical to work with the healthcare system when it comes to transforming our medicines to reduce their impact on global warming. The Sustainable Healthcare Coalition is brilliant at bringing all of these stakeholders together to share best practices and learn from each other.

Changes implemented since joining the Coalition

Since joining the Coalition, a significant change we have implemented is my division’s relocation to a new office in St Pancras, which is supplied with 100% renewable energy. This was an important step towards Ambition Zero Carbon – our commitment to reduce our Global operational carbon footprint by 98% by 2026 and to be carbon negative across the whole value chain by 2030.

At AstraZeneca, we strongly recognise the link between patient and environmental outcomes. We do a lot of our work demonstrating how better disease control leads to a lower carbon footprint in healthcare. The Sustainable Healthcare Coalition is great at helping to apply hard numbers to these observations through resources such as its Care Pathways Calculator. It’s really important to ensure there is data to demonstrate which improvements in care provide the largest carbon savings so that these improvements are weighed against the many other things the healthcare system could be prioritising.

Recent sustainability achievement

A recent sustainability achievement for AstraZeneca is the work they carried out across public,
private and philanthropic sectors to help to found the Sustainable Markets Initiative, a coordinated global effort to enable the private sector to accelerate the transition to a sustainable future. Our Global CEO Sir Pascal Soriot convenes the Health Systems Task Force, at the invitation of His Majesty King Charles III. AstraZeneca is delighted to be joined on the Task Force by Dr Fiona Adshead, the Chair of the SHC, whose wealth of insight and experiences is massively valued by the Initiative.
