Who we are
The Sustainable Healthcare Coalition is a collaboration between public and private sector health systems and private sector companies that engages and connects with a range of players in the UK and internationally to accelerate and amplify action on net-zero healthcare. The Coalition works by engaging, connecting, accelerating, and amplifying action through its pre-competitive environment, which brings many committed commercial organisations together with health system stakeholders, such as healthcare providers, policy and regulatory bodies, and academics.
Meet the Team
Dr Fiona Adshead
Chair for the Sustainable Healthcare Coalition
Fiona serves as the Chair for the Coalition, bringing together partners to advance sustainable healthcare. With over 25 years of experience, Fiona’s career began with a Bachelor of Medicine from the University of London. She has held many senior positions, including Deputy Chief Medical Officer and Director General in the UK Government, Director of Chronic Disease and Health Promotion in the World Health Organization, Chief Wellbeing Officer at Bupa, and Director in PwC’s health and sustainability teams. Currently, Fiona is a visiting Professor at UCL and a Senior Associate at Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership, providing valuable insight and guidance.
Fiona advocates for behaviour change as a pathway to sustainable healthcare and is passionate about reframing thinking and developing innovative strategies and programmes to work towards sustainability in both business and in government.
Keith Moore
Programme Coordinator
With over 25 years’ experience, he is an established environmental and sustainability professional. He began his career as a graduate biochemist in hospital pathology services and later earned an MSc in Environmental Diagnostics. Following this, Keith joined AstraZeneca’s corporate environment team, gaining expertise in environmental management systems and wastewater treatment. Since 2005, Keith has been registered as a Chartered Environmentalist with the Society for the Environment and has been active in numerous national and international bodies.
Keith has been involved with the Coalition since its inception in 2011, initially as AstraZeneca’s representative and, since 2016, as its Programme Coordinator.
Sam Holmes
Programme Lead – Sustainable Care Pathways
Sam leads the Coalition’s collaborative programme that aims to enhance the sustainability of care pathways. With over 15 years of experience as a NHS clinician, she brings substantial project management and leadership experience, combining healthcare delivery realities with a drive for improvement. In 2023, Sam completed a clinical fellowship with the NHS England Chief Sustainability Officer and recently took on an editorial fellowship at BMJ Leader, focused on planetary health and sustainability content.
Sam joined the Coalition in October 2024 as a Project Manager, motivated by the potential for greater influence in sustainable healthcare and the opportunity to engage with the Coalition’s diverse range of collaborative projects and workstreams.
Joanna Bell
Programme Lead – Sustainable Clinical Trials
Joanna is a business transformation professional with a passion for the planet and the people it supports. She is PMP and CISL Business Sustainability Management certified and has 20 years of experience in clinical trials.
Her core focus is driving the Coalition’s programme enabling low carbon and sustainable clinical trials; a role that makes full use of her skills in stakeholder management and business strategy allied to her strong commitment to design and implement solutions that balance business objectives with environmental and social impact
Ruth Chalke
NHS England CSO Clinical Fellow
Ruth is a clinical fellow with NHS England’s Chief Sustainability Officer and is working with the Sustainable Healthcare Coalition for the duration of her fellowship. Having worked in project management and communications in the charity and education sectors for a number of years, she retrained as a dietitian and has 12 years’ clinical experience within the NHS. Ruth has a strong interest in sustainability, having led the Guy’s and St Thomas’ dietetic Green Team which has won two Allied Health Professional sustainability awards, led Trust-wide sustainability initiatives, and is Resource Officer for the British Dietetic Association’s Sustainable Diets Group. During the fellowship Ruth is working on projects to assess the landscape and use cases of carbon calculators, and map rare disease pathways, while supporting Sam with the Patient Care Pathways workstream.
Rose Ingleton
Clinical Sustainability Advisor
Rose has been a practicing clinician since 2015. She sits on both the national committee for the British Neurosurgical Trainees Association and the Association of Surgeons in Training Council, where she also leads the sustainability working group. In 2023, she brought a keen sense of the importance of sustainability in clinical practice to a NHS Chief Sustainability Officers Clinical Fellowship placement with the Sustainable Healthcare Coalition, focusing on care pathways and greening the operating theatre. Rose seeks to accelerate the move to greener healthcare, both to improve resource efficiency in health settings and to provide the best care for patients. We are delighted that Rose is continuing to engage with us, and the sustainable healthcare agenda, alongside her day (and night) job as a practicing neurosurgeon.
Donna Wynne
Executive Assistant for the Sustainable Healthcare Coalition
Donna joined the Coalition in January 2023. She brings over 15 years of experience providing senior administrative support.
Having spent much of her career working within pharmaceutical and environmental settings, she is now continuing to sustainability and environmental improvement efforts by assisting the Coalition and its members to collaborate effectively.
