Learnings from the Green Surgery Webinar

In collaboration with The Association of British HealthTech Industries, we hosted a webinar to discuss the findings of the Green Surgery Report and explore the role of the supply chain and procurement industry in advancing the agenda for decarbonisation and sustainability.

Throughout our discussion, we identified challenges facing the industry, pinpointed areas for innovation, and emphasised the importance of collaboration to drive meaningful change.

 

Tacking Carbon Hotspots in Surgical Pathways

It is evident that there is now a notable shift in recognising the importance of addressing carbon emissions within surgical pathways. While surgeries are essential for patient care, they also harbour significant hotspots contributing to environmental emissions.

Take, for instance, the energy-intensive equipment used, such as lighting and specialised surgical tools, they constitute a substantial portion of these emissions. Moreover, the use of anaesthetic and medical gases contributes to approximately 2% of all NHS emissions. Desflurane, for instance, is 2,500 times more potent than carbon dioxide, highlighting the urgency to seek alternatives. Furthermore, the transportation of patients to and from hospitals adds to the overall emissions. Together, these examples underscore the multifaceted nature of carbon hotspots within surgical pathways.

Therefore, it’s imperative for health systems and healthcare professionals to identify and address these hotspots in their efforts to reduce their environmental impact. By targeting these areas, we can promote sustainability and align with the carbon reduction targets set by the NHS.

Driving Sustainability Through Innovation

Innovation in surgical pathways is key to driving sustainable healthcare forward. From suppliers to health systems to clinicians, it is essential that everyone recognises their role in advancing this agenda. By implementing strategies focused on reducing and reusing materials, such as utilising reusable hats and turning off energy-intensive machinery, clear strides can be made in minimising emissions. Additionally, embracing circular economy principles, like refurbishing and reusing medical devices, can further advance sustainability efforts.

Telemedicine technologies also represent another frontier in sustainable healthcare, offering new avenues for pre- and post-operative consultations and remote patient monitoring. This not only enhances patient care but also reduces the need for travel and associated emissions.

Lastly, transparency from suppliers regarding their data and methodologies is crucial. It fosters trust and facilitates informed decision-making on the journey toward sustainable practices, ensuring that efforts are aligned with the environmental goals of health systems and healthcare professionals.

Sustainability is a continuous process of improvement, requiring ongoing evaluation and adaptation based on available metrics. By collectively embracing innovation and a steadfast commitment to sustainability, we can pave the way for a greener, more sustainable future in surgical care. Focusing on areas of innovation offers a promising pathway to reduce the environmental impact of surgical procedures without compromising patient care quality.

The clear area of consensus that was consolidated in the Green Surgery report findings was the critical importance of collaboration within the industry, demonstrating that collective efforts yield greater results than isolated endeavours.
