As focus and momentum build to deliver clinical research in a more environmentally
sustainable way, forecasting the environmental impacts of individual studies and entire
portfolios becomes increasingly important for clinical trial leaders.
It is vital that we consider the potential contribution of clinical trials to the climate
emergency. In 2021, around 350,000 trails were registered, generating approximately 27.5
million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e). It is therefore imperative to integrate
climate impact considerations into clinical trial design to support carbon reduction efforts
while upholding trial quality and integrity.
The Sustainable Healthcare Coalition and its industry and academic consortium partners
would like to invite you to register for a webinar aimed at supporting biotechnology
companies and their research partner organisations as we develop a pragmatic approach to
reduce the carbon footprint of clinical trials. The aim of this webinar is to:
• Brief you on our work to produce a standardised assessment framework and gather your
feedback.
• Describe our forthcoming online estimation tool which aims to help you as clinical trial
leaders identify and act on environmental “hot spots”. The tool will allow clinical trial
leaders to evaluate implementation impact of decentralised components in the study
design and determine the optimal compromise.
• Invite you to join our collaboration as we seek to reduce the environmental impact of
trials in 2024 and beyond.
Developed in a collaboration with industry and academic partners for the clinical trial
community, the Low Carbon Clinical Trials Framework consists of a methodology document
and guidance document that highlight where and how different activities in clinical trials
drive emissions and it is intended to be supported by an online tool for organisations
involved in sponsoring, designing and operating trials to be able to do their own
assessments based on the method and guidance.
