The Sustainable Healthcare Coalition (SHC) has launched the Patient Care Pathway (PCP) Consortium, a cross-sector collaboration focused on addressing one of sustainable healthcare’s most significant challenges: understanding and measuring the environmental impact of patient care.
The Consortium’s ambition is a future in which healthcare organisations can assess and act on the environmental impact of care pathways using a validated, internationally recognised methodology.
Addressing a critical gap in sustainable healthcare
Healthcare accounts for around 4–5% of global greenhouse gas emissions, with a significant share of that footprint sitting within clinical care pathways – the journeys
patients take through health systems, from diagnosis to treatment and beyond. Despite growing attention on healthcare sustainability, there has been no consistent, standardised way to measure the environmental impact of care pathways across different health systems and markets.
Bringing together expertise from across healthcare
Established in January 2026, the PCP Consortium brings together leading pharmaceutical, medtech and health system organisations under SHC’s stewardship.
Together, members will strengthen the evidence base for care pathway assessment, drive adoption of SHC’s methodology, equip clinicians and decision-makers with
practical tools and guidance, and contribute to the development of emerging standards and reporting frameworks.
The Consortium operates on a pre-competitive basis, enabling organisations to share knowledge, develop evidence and collaborate on common challenges, without
compromising their individual competitive positions. Its work builds on SHC’s existing care pathway framework and complements broader initiatives to improve sustainability across healthcare systems.

By bringing together expertise from across healthcare, industry and policy, the PCP Consortium aims to strengthen the consistency, credibility and practical application of
environmental assessment, supporting more informed decisions about the future of patient care.
We’re calling on organisations across pharma, health systems, patient groups, and policy to get involved – to extend the evidence base across more care settings, more geographies and more patient populations, and to ensure that what emerges is a methodology the whole sector can stand behind.
